3D Reflection 47 - Texturing Columns

I edited the unwrap sheets for the columns to prevent texture warping. I used the relax option to straighten out the UV islands before re-exporting them.

I started by applying alphas to the middle section, using the shape of the pharaoh and osiris. I wanted them to be embossed on. I used a low height at first and offsetted it by a few mm to one side, before turning the height all the way up, for a rounded carved effect.

I then added painted trims, and decided to use paint to colour the figures. Unlike the walls, I think having this paint on the columns created variation.

I liked how it looked in the level, but in the corridors it needed some lighting.

I used colours that weren't too saturated but not too dull as to look too old. I also used a low opacity eraser to go over areas that would look worn.

I replaced the columns in the L room with wall dressings as I realised that the walls fit together better without them, and this left more space. I used columns in the area towards the back of the L room however, as this is the area of interest.

I textured the next column, the damaged one, using the same painting techniques alondside the use of plain sandstone to indicate broken areas of sandstone, damaged in battle.

This is the combination of damaged and chipped columns.

Painting the broken pieces of column was challenging as I had to try and match images up properly. I also used the plain sandstone here for the broken parts.

The final effect of all the painted columns was a fleshed out level that felt more complete.
