3D - blog topic 4

I chose to think about how I would recreate/how I am making a recreation of the piece I reviewed in week 1, the stylised model of Geralt. Although I am only recreating the bust, There are elements of the original piece by Julen Urrutia that I admired and wanted to keep, as well as elements that I wanted to change.

Julen Urrutia's Geralt Fanart

My recreation of the bust of Urrutia's stylised Geralt in Zbrush

For example, with the shape of the head I used many of the planar techniques that Urrutia used in Zbrush to create a clean sharp and stylised form. However, I decided that I would alter the proportions as I wanted Geralt's face to be longer. This seemed to suit the character better as it was similar in shape to the original design of Geralt, but still allowed me to create a recognisable caricature of him. It also helped to reflect his personality and emphasise his serious expression better in my opinion.

I liked Urrutia's use of hair alphas, which adds a touch of realism to the model. I decided that once I got to the stage of recreating the hair, I would use the extrude options in Zbrush, and sculpt details into these areas of hair and facial hair using ridges and other detail brushes in Zbrush. I chose to do this as to me it kept in line with the level of stylisation that seemed suitable and matched the rest of the model. It was also a new technique as I had never used the extrude function in Zbrush before.

There are elements of the model making process that I would like to learn, for example how to actually recreate the realistic hair alphas that Urrutia used in the original model, as well as how to create convincingly life-like vibrant eyes. I would also like to make the rest of the body and the armour details, many of which were produced using Marvelous Designer which I do not know how to use yet.
